For over 35 years, Pennsauken has been led by a single political party, with many elected officials holding Township Committee positions for multiple terms in addition to positions in other local entities like Pennsauken Sewerage Authority and the School District. Is it in the best interest of the residents to have one party with such a strong hold? We have seen the changes that have occurred over the years, both good and bad, and we believe that now is the time for change. While there are some great things about Pennsauken, we feel we can bring a different perspective and fresh ideas while contributing towards positive changes in our town and our Government.
We feel that it is important for residents to be aware of decisions being made on our behalf. The current township website is not always easy to navigate and meeting minutes for Township committee meetings are not posted timely. We would also like to see improvements in technology for township services. Township job openings and board / committee openings should be widely publicized and easily accessible to all qualified residents in town. It often appears that Township jobs, in various departments and services, are offered to friends and family of those in power.
We are committed to improving the quality of life for all residents of our town. We feel strongly that the best way to foster a real sense of community is to engage our residents, provide unique and fun activities and events throughout the year, and get people involved through volunteerism. When people are involved regardless if they are homeowners or renters, they become more invested in their homes and their neighborhoods. We would like to look into the possibility of forming a resident committee of volunteers from all different parts of town where they will come together monthly with members of Township committee to be able to discuss concerns, bring forth ideas, have meaningful discussions in a more informal setting that may encourage more people to come out and get involved. Residents who get involved become more invested in our town and then we all win.
While we currently have numerous great events in town, we believe we can bring some fresh ideas of other ways to bring residents together. Many area towns hold different types of events that we would love to see here such as movie nights in the parks, free concerts, expanding summer programs for students, and more programs that work with Law enforcement. We are also interested in having a feasibility study done for the possibility of a community center which many residents have expressed to us they would like to see. Not only would all of these things improve the way residents feel about our town, but they would also help to enhance the reputation of our town in South Jersey.
We would like to encourage new and different types of successful businesses to come to our town and continue to build on great things happening on Haddonfield Rd, as well as Westfield Ave and other areas. We continue to support local businesses and feel strongly that living / dining / shopping and even working here in town are very important to our continued growth as a community. We are proponents of an Economic development organization in town that is a partnership between Township government and the business community. By working together, we can attract new businesses and promote community pride.
We want to get involved in our town and give back to the community that we love. We hope that you will give us the opportunity to bring a fresh perspective and new ideas to our township government. For the last 3 decades there have only been 17 different members of Township committee, it’s mostly the same people over and over. Only 3 have been women, and only ONE political party has been represented. It is Time for Change!
